Coffee good, wordpress updates suck

So after almost 3 hours of tweaking, troubleshooting and getting it back to where it should be, I’ve upgraded JED to 2.7.1. For a small point release, this upgrade was painful and horrifying. I would think for an application that has been around for awhile, they would have fixed most of the unix file permission issues when installing/upgrading/FTP’ing. However, I was getting error after error and with my limited linux knowledge it was quite frustrating. After almost giving up, I figured I would try re-installing a plugin manually [copy to plugin in directory, and activate] and voila! It works.

Sigh…

Note to self….never again

Anyways…so my knees are hurting. I think I’m getting old. I’m trying random leg stretching/strengthing exercises and I don’t know if it is making things worse, or if it’s actually helping. Leg lifts at work seem like a good idea, however I think my head bobs up and down after each rep. I hope my co-workers don’t think I’m nuts. I think I need new shoes….

A happy X-mas and a merry New Years

So what has turned into a successful home theatre setup [impressive to my standards which may not be that of an audiophile/videophile], I have finally completed the htpc that I wanted. My X-mas presents to myself/Jenn/house this year was a new reciever [Pioneer VSX1018 AH-K] and a set of 5.1 speakers [Energy Take Classic]. And boy does it sound good….Jenn may roll her eyes at me, but it’s nice to achieve surround sound on a good hi-def movie.

New Years was fun, nothing like a guitar hero, drinks and good friends, resolutions for this year will be posted to be remembered once I figure out what they are…

Year of HD issues…sigh

So why after years of harddrives not failing on me and not having data issues, this has been the bad year of harddrives. I had one failed drive [severe head crash] and tried some home-brew fixes [i.e. freeze the drive, let it spin up and go at it again]. After that failure, I tried to see what it would cost for data recovery. And than the kicker was that it would be about $2500 to restore “some” of the data. So I said to hell with that and had to download everything again.

Now the more recent problem was with a corrupt MFT and with that I had more troubles, thinking it was an enclosure issue [which I had to RMA 2 of them, now I might have to RMA another one…] and than finally figuring out it was actually the disk. I’ve managed to get it all back using some geeky tools [TestDisk, getDataBack NTFS]. Sigh….what a year…

First full day in the Chinese jungle

so we’re basically war-walking seeing if we can find a free wifi and happens to find one. Today we had what Franny claims as his favorite snack in HK as the pineapple bun with. Butter! I have to admit it was pretty damn good. Alsowaz cheap, for 2 and 2 Lai cha (milk tea) it was 33 HKD which is about 5 bucks. Anyways, it’s getting hotter, and I can feel the sweat coming, but I also constantly feel the stomach telling me to keep eating more. Had some good hand made noodles last night win Nathan (Jenn’s faux cousin). We walked around ladies market which was interesting, I can see how it can be overwhelming for some, and bartering is sometimes not even required cause things are so cheap already.

Anyways gotta continue the trek to the other island!

Not in HK yet!?!

Not in HK you say? Apparently they couldn’t close the door on the plane or something, but I guess it’s better than flying and door falling off. Oh well…we have free acccomodations at the Radisson in Narita Tokyo. Also, too bad that it’s not in the core of downtown Tokyo or we would have walked around more and I would have a lot more to say. Anyhow, I think I’m in the Mississauga of Tokyo, drab and boring. Also got a free dinner @ the hotel, but no SUSHI!! ugh! Maybe I’ll get some for breakfast in the airport…hopefully

Another day, another asian city.

Pre-HK

So I’ve got the bright idea that it would be best to stay up all night and hopefully I can change my bio-schedule to HK time by doing so. Jenn already is falling asleep, so I don’t know how long I can last for now *yawn* *yawn*. I think I need some sort of substinance to keep going, but luckily I’ve got many movies/tv shows to keep me busy. Thanks to the greatness of cable TV [which most people should know that we lack this at our place], Robin Hood: Men in Tights is on which is also helping me get through the night.

Staying up late reminds me of my UW days as well as the “Green Zones” at work now. I’m confident that I can change my sleep schedule to HK time, although there is a lack of faith from Jenn, but I will try and show her…I’m not the one that fell asleep FIRST! I am also confident that we packed everything that we need and that each luggage is less than 50kg [crossing my fingers]

Let the journey begin [in 7 hours when we board our plane]

Gadget Fever…

So…I bought the iPod Touch 2G, and it’s pretty damn slick. Fring app should be pretty good too, even contemplating getting Skype Out, although I don’t want to pay for it…

Next Gadget…BlackBerry Storm [http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/10/04/blackberry-storm-9500-and-9530-everything-you-could-ever-want-to-know/]
